Password Protect Directories

Keeping your private information ... private.

Using the Protect Directories option, you can limit the amount of access users have to certain parts of your site. You can specify a username and password for the directory you are protecting. Each protected directory can have multiple users (each with different passwords if you prefer) who have access to it. Additionally, the Protect Directories option can be used to remove a user’s access from a protected directory. You can set up unique user names and passwords for each user who request access to the protected directory. Though more time consuming, this method would be more secure.

Note: In order to use the Protect Directories option, the Microsoft FrontPage Extensions option must be disabled. If it is enabled, then you must use your version of Microsoft FrontPage to protect the directories.

  Password Protecting Directories

To password protect a directory and it's content, click on the "Protect Directories" icon in the Control Panel to open the Directory Protection Manager. From the "Directory:" drop down list, select the directory you wish to protect.

The next screen will allow you to add a new user in the User ID box, and a corrosponding password in the Password box.

Remember: User Names and Passwords are case sentative.

Enter this information and press Submit.

Now, whenever someone tries to access this directory, the will be prompted for the user name and password. Without the correct user name and password combination they will not get in.

Note: You can add as many user names and passwords as you wish to any directory.

Modifying a User ID or Password

Once a directory is protected, you can modify the credentials protecting it by going back into the Directory Protection Manager and selecting the directory that is protected. If the directory is already protected, a new section shows up in the Directory Protection Manager wher eyou can remove users.

To make changes to a User ID or Password, the easiest way to do this is to delete the user ID/Password and replace them.
